There is certainly no shortage of food in the U.S. Likewise, there is no shortage of the types of food you can order from restaurants, or make at home with the right ingredients. Because the U.S. is such a melting pot of cultures, the cuisine all around us is varied and rich.

In the U.S. ethnic foods market, Mexican food is the most popular, comprising 62% of the food, drug, mass index (FMDx), and it’s no surprise. Mexican food, or Hispanic food, is known for its nutritional value, freshness, flavor, and lively presentation. Arroz Con Pollo

“Arroz con pollo” translates to “chicken with rice” in English. Both brown and white rice can be used. The dish is thought to have originated in Spain, though there is some debate over this. Regardless of its origin, arroz con pollo has become a staple of Mexican cuisine. While chicken with rice sounds like a fairly simple, even bland dish, there are several ways to enhance and enliven the recipe with spices, vegetables, and other additions. The most common additions include hot peppers, onion, plantains, tomatoes, garlic, and garnish. Some arroz con pollo recipes even include beer! Several arroz con pollo recipes can be found online. The possibilities are endless!

Empanadas

For a savory and easy to make appetizer, empanadas hit the spot. Originating in Portugal and the northwest of Spain, empanadas are fried or baked pastries stuffed with meats, cheeses, vegetables, and more. Aside from whatever goes inside the empanada, several types of dough can be used as well. And because just about anything can go inside the dough, you can make dessert empanadas as well! These are similar to crepes and turnovers.

Tres Leches Cake Recipes

For another Mexican style dessert, you might try a tres leches cake, or “three milk cake.” This dessert is a sponge cake which utilizes three or more types of milk, typically evaporated milk, condensed milk, and a heavy cream. It is similar to the Italian tiramisu in terms of its consistency and ingredients. Like the previous two dishes, a lot can be done with tres leches cakes. For instance, topping a tres leches cake with whipped cream and fruit makes for a light delicious treat. Cinnamon and powdered sugar are also great on top of these cakes!
