Opening a coffee shop or joining a coffee franchise is considered one of the most successful business ideas for a number of reasons: for example, an estimated 14 billion espresso coffees are consumed around the world every year, creating a significant demand for the product. Because of this, it isn’t surprising that the coffee industry is currently one of the fastest growing fields. This alone is enough reason to check out coffee shop franchise opportunities in your area, but there is yet more data that supports this career choice: the many health benefits of coffee. In fact, an American study recently revealed that coffee may help protect consumers against some skin cancers.
To test the effect of coffee on skin cancer, a research team pulled data from another study, which had had tracked 447,357 retired Americans for ten years. Of this group, 2,904 had developed malignant melanoma while 1,874 had early-stage melanoma. Every participant had provided data on their coffee consumption, activity level, alcohol intake, body mass index, and other factors. Additionally, researchers calculated each person’s UV exposure by using data on the amount of sunlight in the participants’ hometowns.
According to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the researchers found that participants who drank four or more cups of coffee every day were 20% less likely to develop malignant melanoma than non-coffee drinkers. The research team has admitted that they don’t know what exactly in coffee could be offering this protection, and lack data on how many study participants regularly use sunscreen. However, given that coffee has been linked to reduced rates of diabetes, liver problems and other conditions in the past, it would not be surprising to learn that the beverage has yet another useful effect on the body.
Despite the study’s findings, the best way to protect against skin cancer and melanoma is still, of course, to use sun protection and conduct regular skin exams. However, because skin cancer is such a common condition, any additional prevention can make a difference. With such a healthy benefit, combined with an existing demand for the product, it is easy to understand why many people consider coffee shops one of the best ideas for a successful business available today.
