America’s love for ice cream, gelato, frozen yogurt, and other decadent desserts such as ice cream cakes, is well-known. The NPD Group’s research indicates that in any 2-week period, 40% of the United States’ population will consume ice cream. On average, this amounts to at least 28.5 times this year.
Every year, roughly 1.5 billion gallons of ice cream and other frozen desserts are produced in the United States. Thanks to United States’ dairy farmers, roughly 9% of the milk they provide is used as a central ingredient in ice cream.
Most of this ice cream is produced in June, which is no surprise. There’s something about summer that resonates with ice cream. Nevertheless, it is eaten with delight all year long, and sometimes more than once a day.
Recent surveys show that 90% of American households indulge their love of ice cream on a regular basis. While vanilla continues to be a favorite flavor for 28% of their consumers, according to the International Ice Cream Association, there are so many other flavors to explore.
When Americans go out for their favorite flavors of ice cream, frozen yogurt, or gelato, chances are they’ll sample new flavors as well. In fact, they may go through several frozen yogurt spoons in order to sate their curiosity. Just seeing all those frozen yogurt spoons on the counter of their favorite ice cream parlor may entice them to experience just 1 more flavor before they make a decision.
Even though many ice cream parlors offer a variety of decadent frozen desserts such as sorbet and frozen yogurt, there are quite a few frozen yogurt shops as well. By the end of 2013 alone, there were roughly 2,582 yogurt shops in operation, which is great news for frozen yogurt lovers. When they add fruit or other types of toppings, many Americans consider this to be a meal by itself.
Whether their favorite treat is ice cream, gelato, sorbet, or frozen yogurt, Americans do love variety. They also tend to be curious about different flavor combinations, and will experiment accordingly.
