Hummus has quickly become one of the most popular dips in the United States. Hummus nutritional benefits are well known, and when you couple those with the incredible flavors of all the different types of hummus out there, the reasons for this popularity are obvious.

As written on About.com, the first recorded recipe for hummus is thought to have originated in 13th century Europe, though that isn’t without controversy. Greeks, Arabs, and Israelis all claim that the first hummus recipe was actually their creation.

Regardless of where it started out, hummus is now an international food. Here in the U.S., our supermarket shelves are lined with the stuff. You can get everything from roasted garlic to spicy hummus dip. Many others are using easy hummus recipes, like the one we’re about to show you, to make cheap, delicious hummus at home. Tools You’ll Need to Make Hummus

  • A food processor
  • A sieve
  • A two-cup tupperware container

Ingredients

  • One 15oz can of chickpeas
  • One-third cup good quality tahini paste
  • Three tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • The juice of one lemon
  • Two cloves fresh garlic

Putting Your Hummus Spread Together

  1. Toss the can of chickpeas into your sieve and rinse any of the leftover canning liquid off. This will remove the tinny flavor from the chickpeas.
  2. In your food processor, combine the chickpeas, tahini paste, lemon juice, garlic, and two tablespoons of the olive oil together. At this stage, you can also add roasted peppers, cilantro, and other ingredients to make this easy hummus recipe your own.
  3. Process the ingredients until completely smooth.
  4. Transfer the hummus to the tupperware container, and finish the dip by drizzling the remaining olive oil over the top.
  5. Serve with pita chips and vegetables as a dip, or try using it as a sandwich spread. Bon appetit!
