South Anchorage Farmers' Market WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Issue #49 • Thursday, October 15, 2009

Hello All!

The unusually warm weather is taking everyone by surprise!  A very happy surprise indeed.  We don’t know if this will be the last market for the season or not, but shouldn’t we all treat it like it MIGHT be the last? Go and take advantage of all this great, fresh, local produce!

The Saturday South Anchorage Farmers’ Market will continue at the same location, at the Subway/Cellular One Sports Centre at the corner of Old Seward and O’Malley, weather permitting.  However, the market will start an hour later, due to the cold temperatures. The market will be from 10am to 2pm.

GLACIER VALLEY FARM
Glacier Valley Farms will be here at with their great selection of carrots, cabbage, beets, and green tomatoes. Check out the recipe below for fried green tomatoes!

VANDERWEELE FARMS

They will have broccoli, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, greens, and tons of different lettuce.  That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Check out their beautiful table of produce!

REMPEL FAMILY FARM
They thought that the season was about done and then we got spring again!  That means that they will still have a lot of nice greens like kale, cabbage, and broccoli, but also lettuce, asian greens, arugula, collards, mustard, green onions and more.  Of course, they will have lots of potatoes, carrots, parsnips, and Snow Apple turnips.

STOCKWELL FARMS
Vern Stockwell has 8or more different kinds of new potatoes; red bliss, German butterballs, Yukon Golds, and lots of others.  Also bags of potatoes at great deals! Lots of sweet carrots, leeks, onions and cauliflower.  Beautiful dark leafy greens and kale.  Interesting jams, jellies, and pickled vegetables too.

ARCTIC CHOICE SEAFOODS
Let Arctic Choice titillate your taste buds one last time with fresh seafood. This will most likely be the last week this year to stock up on fresh mouth-watering Halibut, Rockfish, Cod, Coho, Clams and Oysters. Also, don’t forget to check out the frozen selection of Salmon Meat, Cod Cheeks, Red King Crab legs, Scallops, and Sockeye. If you missed out on Fresh Spot Shrimp last week, be sure to stop by early enough to nab those spotty crustaceans.

MARY JANE
Mary Jane has a new addition to her awesome selection.  Huge cinnamon rolls (with or without raisins) from Europa Bakery.  Both have a great cream cheese frosting on top.  Who can resist?  She will also have her selection of pastries and breads from The French Oven and Slack’s Sugar Shack from Palmer.  Those treats will surely keep you warm while perusing the market.

THE RED BEET
The Red Beet will also be there with breads from local veggies & seeds, all local yoghurt and fresh farmer’s cheese, as well as our yummy market pies from all local pork, cheese and onions.  In addition we will have lots of gluten free bread and goodies as well as regular baked goods.  See you there!

VITALI AND MONICA SELDOVITSCH
They will have potatoes, onions, beets, greens and a variety of other vegetables.

FAT BOY RIBS AND BARBECUE
Tasty ribs, pork, and hot dogs with a nice tangy sauce. Great for lunch or a quick snack while walking around the market.

THE FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA
The Future Farmers of America will bring more fresh Alaskan honey and greens.
