South Anchorage Farmers' Market WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Issue #48 • Thursday, October 08, 2009

Hello All!

Did you go to the market last Saturday?  I did and I was blown away by the fantastic selection we still have.  I was also excited to see all the people there! So many were taking advantage of all this great produce and very happy that the market will continue for a couple more weeks.

The Saturday South Anchorage Farmers’ Market will continue at the same location, at the Subway/Cellular One Sports Centre at the corner of Old Seward and O’Malley, weather permitting.  However, the market will start an hour later, due to the cold temperatures. The market will be from 10am to 2pm.

GLACIER VALLEY FARM
Glacier Valley Farms will be here at the South market with their fantastic selection of artichokes, carrots, cabbage, beets, and those gorgeous, flavorful, ruby red tomatoes.

VANDERWEELE FARMS
They will have broccoli, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, greens, and tons of different lettuce.  That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Check out their beautiful table of produce!

REMPEL FAMILY FARM
This “sort of” warm weather is welcome.  It is allowing us to get in all our late crops: carrots, parsnips, pumpkins, potatoes, and Brussels sprouts to name a few.  These are now a bit sweeter due to a couple of light frosts.  The “sort of” warm weather is allowing the greens to stay nice as well.

Rempel Family Farm will have nice greens like lettuces, kales, chard, beet greens, maybe some spinach, green onions, arugula, dill, cilantro, collards, mustard, turnip greens and more. Roots like carrots, parsnips, potatoes, and Snow Apple turnips will be in abundance. They will also have sugar pumpkins, spaghetti and stripetti squash in abundance.

STOCKWELL FARMS
Vern Stockwell has 8 or more different kinds of new potatoes; red bliss, German butterballs, Yukon Golds, and lots of others.  Also bags of potatoes at great deals! Lots of sweet carrots, leeks, onions and cauliflower.  Beautiful dark leafy greens and kale.  Interesting jams, jellies, and pickled vegetables too.

ARCTIC CHOICE SEAFOODS
Good news!!! Arctic Choice will be here for a couple more weeks with more scrumptious seafood. Indulge your appetite with fresh Halibut, Cod, Rockfish, Coho, and live delectable clams and oysters. Don’t miss out on FRESH Spot Shrimp! We will also have an excellent frozen assortment of seafood which will include…Cod Cheeks, Razor Clam Meat, Sockeye, Salmon Meat, Halibut, Coho, Red King Crab legs, Scallops, Spot Shrimp and Sidestripe Shrimp.

MARY JANE
Mary Jane has a new addition to her awesome selection.  Huge cinnamon rolls (with or without raisins) from Europa Bakery.  Both have a great cream cheese frosting on top.  Who can resist?  She will also have her selection of pastries and breads from The French Oven and Slack’s Sugar Shack from Palmer.  Those treats will surely keep you warm while perusing the market.

THE RED BEET
Come check out what the Red Beet has to offer this week.  Too many items to list them all, but here are some of this week’s offering:  Our fresh farmer’s cheese with fresh leeks. Carrot Leek Bread (local carrots and leeks, of course!), Wild Dock Seed, and Multi Grain Bread (wild harvest dock).  Our ALL ALASKAN MARKET PIES from Alaskan sausage, Valley Cheese, local leeks, onions and herbs.  LOTS OF GLUTEN FREE BREAD AND OTHER GOODIES.  This week’s gluten free breads: Nutty Leek and Super Grain!  And, as always, an assortment of other goodies!

VITALI AND MONICA SELDOVITSCH
They will have potatoes, onions, beets, greens and a variety of other vegetables.

FAT BOY RIBS AND BARBECUE
Tasty ribs, pork, and hot dogs with a nice tangy sauce. Great for lunch or a quick snack while walking around the market.

THE FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA
The Future Farmers of America will bring more fresh Alaskan honey and greens.

GRAY OWL
A great variety of peppers, from sweet to spicy.

RISE & SHINE BAKERY
Alison & Dan have moved to their wintertime routine, so they won’t be at the farmers market—but you can order their breads through their website, www.riseandshinebread.com, and pick up your loaves at delivery locations on Wednesdays. You can also sign up for a weekly newsletter, the Bakery Bulletin, that will tell you what loaves they are baking each week, includes recipes, and will remind you to order bread each week.

THIS WEEK’S RECIPE
Check out the Tibetan potato curry recipe listed below. It’s easy to put together and I have even done it with left over potatoes. I hope you like it.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER THE MARKET ENDS FOR THE SEASON?
Glacier Valley Farm CSA produce boxes might just be your answer!  Have you ever considered joining a CSA? Community Supported Agriculture not only gives you some motivation to eat what is good for you, it also helps your local farmers.  You also won’t be going to the grocery store as often.

Check out www.GlacierValleyCSA.com The website has lots of information and pick up spots are growing all around Anchorage and the Valley.  And of course it has recipes! Sign up is easy and there is no monthly commitment.

For more information about the market, contact Arthur Keyes, South Anchorage Farmers’ Market Manager, at 907-354-5833, or at .

Please respond to this email if you’d like to be removed from the newsletter list.
