South Anchorage Farmers' Market WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Hello All!
Only three more Saturday markets remaining this season! The last one is October 3rd. I have come to depend on the market not only for doing my shopping, but also for seeing my friends and neighbors. We can take the time to catch up and see what each other has discovered at the market, maybe share a little neighborhood gossip, and talk about all those geese flying overhead. I am treasuring each market as the season’s end comes near.
NEW EAGLE RIVER FARMERS’ MARKET
There is a new Saturday farmer’s market located outside of Mike’s Meats, 12110 Business Blvd. Hours are 9 am-2 pm. Glacier Valley Farms will be there with their selection of zucchini, carrots, cabbage, tomatoes and sweet strawberries. Bob Shoemaker will also be there bringing lots of greens and lettuce.
GLACIER VALLEY FARM
Glacier Valley Farm will have lots of zucchini, carrots, cabbage, and as long as the frost holds off, strawberries. Tomatoes are available as well as garlic.
VANDERWEELE FARMS
They will have broccoli, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, greens, and tons of different lettuce. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Check out their beautiful table of produce.
REMPEL FAMILY FARM
This week Rempel Family Farm will have certified organic sugar pumpkins, spaghetti squash, stripetti squash, buttercup squash, sweet celery, at least 8 kinds of potatoes, carrots, leeks, snow apple turnips, and a whole truck load of other vegetables that need to be eaten. It still hasn’t frosted yet so there will still be zucchini and maybe green beans and sugar snap peas.
STOCKWELL FARMS
Vern Stockwell has a great selection of new potatoes; red bliss, German butterballs, Yukon Golds, and lots of others. Beautiful green beans, onions, zucchini, with lots to choose from. Beautiful dark leafy greens and kale too. Interesting jams, jellies, and pickled vegetables too.
ARCTIC CHOICE SEAFOODS
Arctic Choice will have a great selection of Alaska seafood to enjoy. We will have fresh Halibut, Rockfish, Cod, and Coho salmon. We’re bringing frozen Red King Crab legs at a price you can’t beat. For you shrimp lovers, we will have Sidestipe Shimp and new to the market this season, Spot Shrimp from Southeast Alaska. We will also have Razor Clams, Salmon Meat, Scallops, and fresh Oysters. Make sure to stop by early.
NORTHERN LIGHTS MUSHROOM
They will be there with their tasty oyster mushrooms!
MARY JANE
She will also have her selection of pastries and breads from The French Oven and Slack’s Sugar Shack from Palmer.
THE RED BEET
They have not been at the markets for a couple of weeks so we need to let our Glutenos know their product will be back as well as all of the fall harvest items!
Wild seed breads with ripe seeds now available, such as the dock, cow parsnip and wormwood.
Also wormwood date dressing, beet-raspberry dressing, fresh bison market pies and fresh CHERRY pies as well, fresh yogurt, fresh spiced cabbage (spiced in wild raspberry chipotle) and lots of fresh baked gluten free products as well as other fresh harvest dressings and vinaigrettes.
RISE & SHINE BAKERY AND THEIR WINTERTIME SCHEDULE
This week Rise & Shine Bakery’s 100% whole grain sourdough pan loaves will be their SIGNATURE LEVAIN (French for “naturally-leavened bread”) and the GOLDEN MAIZE bread, loaded with freshly-ground cornmeal to give it a great southwestern taste. If you haven’t tried this bread for breakfast with butter and honey, you might want to!
As for savory sourdough hearth loaves, you’ll be able to get the 100% whole wheat TOASTED WALNUT, (great with cheese, as a side to soups and salads, and as breakfast toast), and the Alaskan ONION RYE is back! If you think you don’t like rye bread, keep in mind that most people who think they don’t like rye bread actually are objecting to the caraway seeds in the bread. Rise & Shine’s onion rye bread doesn’t have caraway seeds in it—so give it a try on a sandwich if you haven’t already!
And for all you folks who have been patiently waiting for the FRUITED ALMOND sourdough bread, it’s your lucky week! Alison & Dan look forward to seeing you on Saturday!
Lots of people have been asking about Rise & Shine’s wintertime schedule. Dan & Alison will still be baking bread for the next two farmers markets (September 19 & 26), and then they will switch over to their wintertime baking routine. You’ll be able to order your bread through their website, http://www.riseandshinebread.com, starting the week before their first pick-up day on Wednesday, October 14. You can pick up your bread in South Anchorage (Over the Rainbow Toys, 12201 Industry Way, D5, next to the Huffman Post Office: 4-6pm) or Downtown (Side Street Espresso, 412 G Street: 8-10am).
If you sign up for the bakery email newsletter (see the box on the left margin of the website), every week Alison will email you with the bread flavors of the week, and remind you to order.
THIS WEEK’S RECIPES
The romaine lettuce this year has been one of my favorites. Sure, I love all the different lettuces, but the romaine locally grown is deep green and actually has some taste-unlike the big box store’s lettuce.
This has turned out to be one of our favorite salads this summer and fall. I hope you give it a try. I think you’ll also enjoy the Tuscan carrot top and rice soup. Please see the links below.
VITALI AND MONICA SELDOVITSCH
They will have peanut potatoes, cucumbers, green beans, onions and a variety of fresh herbs.
FAT BOY RIBS AND BARBECUE
Tasty ribs, pork, and hot dogs with a nice tangy sauce. Great for lunch or a quick snack while walking around the market.
THE FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA
The Future Farmers of America will bring more fresh Alaskan honey and cut flowers.
GRAY OWL
A great variety of peppers, from sweet to spicy.
MY LORD’S FLORAL
They are selling flowers from Larson’s Nursery, a local cut flower producer. These flowers come from the valley and last for weeks.
THE SOUTH ANCHORAGE FARMERS’ MARKET COOKBOOKS HAVE RETURNED!
The South Anchorage Farmers Market cookbooks are re-printed and are ready for you to pick up. The cookbook, written by Alison Arians (one of your Farmers’ Market Reporters) is a compilation of all the recipes from last year’s summertime farmers’ market newsletters, as well as from her wintertime Rise & Shine Bakery Bulletin emails, plus some additional recipes.
The book contains over 100 recipes, on full-sized, spiral-bound pages. Alison wrote a thorough index and table of contents for the book, organized the vegetable section of the book alphabetically, and cross-referenced the recipes exhaustively, so you can easily find just the right recipe. Now you don’t have to search through your emails for recipes you vaguely remember, print out the pages of the newsletters, or try and figure out how to organize them once you have a pile of printouts on your counter. We all hope this cookbook is the answer to getting the recipes out of your computer and into your kitchen! And we hope you’ll be even more inspired to cook up loads of fresh vegetables, fruits, seafood, and bread.
When you buy the cookbook, which costs $20, you can also get the COOLEST folding wire cookbook holder! It’s called the Pageboy Adjustable Bookholder. It folds up to almost nothing to fit in a kitchen drawer, it holds your place in two recipes at once so you can easily flip back and forth between recipes, and holds ANY size cookbook in the perfect position to read it while you’re cooking. Two more reasons I love it: it saves space on your counter because the cookbook is up on its edge, and your cookbook isn’t lying flat in a puddle of balsamic vinegar or maple syrup while you cook! The cookbook holders, sold separately, are $6.
You can get the cookbook and holder at the South Anchorage Farmers’ Market this coming Saturday at the Glacier Valley stand.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER THE MARKET ENDS FOR THE SEASON?
Glacier Valley Farm CSA produce boxes might just be your answer! Have you ever considered joining a CSA? Community Supported Agriculture not only gives you some motivation to eat what is good for you, it also helps your local farmers. You also won’t be going to the grocery store as often.
Check out www.GlacierValleyCSA.com The website has lots of information and pick up spots are growing all around Anchorage and the Valley. And of course it has recipes! Sign up is easy and there is no monthly commitment.

The bread from Rise & Shine bakery isn't just bread, it's a special treat that I plan entire meals around. The quality is top shelf, and I just know every loaf is made with love.
