South Anchorage Farmers' Market WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Hello!
Well, the weather last Saturday was a little ominous—could you believe the thunder? But thanks so much to you intrepid Farmers’ Market shoppers who braved the weather! So nice to see you out and about! Thanks for coming and supporting the farmers and vendors!
Have you been planting your garden this week? If you’ve realized there are holes to be filled—either in your vegetable garden or in your perennial garden, there are plenty of plants for you to choose from at the market!! This is about the time when we can tell if something didn’t make it through the winter… the plant sellers at the market will sell you top-quality plants that are especially chosen to thrive here in Alaska.
A.D. Farms will have jams, dessert breads, and eggs. You can talk to Alex, as well, about buying a pig, if you’re interested—you can order one for $350 down, plus $1.75/pound at the time of butchering. You can choose the size of your pig, up to 300 pounds.
Vanderweele Farms has lots of great potatoes and onions for sale—both red onions and yellow onions. My recipes this week are inspired by the potatoes again this week—the main event is a really fun twist on a samosa (a savory Indian potato-filled deep-fried pastry). Instead of making a pastry, I’ve put the samosa filling in lightly-grilled red pepper halves, and then baked them to finish! You’re going to love this dish! I think this dish is fantastic with our Butterball potatoes! Then, the question was what to serve this new invention with. I tried a couple of different things, but landed finally on a lightly-spiced lentil salad that I think is just perfect. Even if you don’t make the samosa-stuffed peppers, the lentil salad is yummy all on its own!
You can get breads of all kinds from Mary Jane, selling bread from the French Oven bakery. She will also have those yummy macaroons , ham and cheese croissants, and those delicious, layered, buttery cookies called palmiers! Rise & Shine Bakery won’t be at the market with our whole grain breads until June 7th.
Are you looking for an easy way to deal with all those recipes you’ve been receiving via farmers market newsletter emails and bakery bulletins for the past year? Look no farther! Your answer is here! The Farmers’ Market cookbooks are ready and waiting! The cookbook is a compilation of all the recipes from my summertime farmers’ market newsletters, as well as from my wintertime Rise & Shine Bakery Bulletin emails, plus some additional recipes. The book contains over 100 recipes, on full-sized, spiral-bound pages, thoroughly indexed, organized, and cross-referenced. They are $15, which includes a really cool folding wire cookbook holder while supplies last (holders sold separately for $6, if you like).

There is nothing better than a fresh salad with homemade salad dressing, and the South Anchorage Farmers' Market is full of recipes for them! I especially love Alison's green salad with garlicky red wine mustard vinaigrette, so fresh and full of flavor. I also love the spinach salad with hazelnuts and rosemary-balsamic vinaigrette. Spinach is so healthy for you and tasty too! Thanks for all your wonderful recipes, Alison!
