South Anchorage Farmers' Market WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Issue # 39 • Thursday, August 06, 2009

Hello All!

There are lots of things going on at the South Anchorage Farmer’s Market this week!

THE BROCCOLI GIVEAWAY!!  THIS SATURDAY, AUGUST 8!
When was the last time you ate Alaskan broccoli?  You know it’s good for you, but it just doesn’t have the flavor it used to?  Are you used to eating the Lower 48 stuff? Well, you are in luck.  Mr. VanderWeele wants you to try Alaskan broccoli for free! Yep. FREE! You can have two beautiful heads of sweet, tender, fresh Alaskan broccoli. Come early—because VanderWeele Farms can only bring so many cases to give away—so this offer is only good while supplies last!

Be sure to use the website for great recipes. It’s a treasure trove of recipes that not only use broccoli, but all sorts of vegetables.

What you need to do.
1. Print out the broccoli coupon. It is in this Thursday’s newsletter.
2. Cut the coupon off.
3. Make plans to get up early on Saturday morning (the market starts at 9am).
4. Bring your coupon to the South Anchorage Farmers’ Market (O’Malley & Old Seward Hwy) on Saturday, August 8th.
5. Make a beeline to VanderWeele Farms’ stand.
6. Then give us your feedback! Did you love it? Did you already love broccoli?

Did you miss the sign up deadline? No worries! All you have to do is sign up for the newsletter at the market. Then you can go and get your free broccoli. But what if Mr. VanderWeele runs out of broccoli? I can’t make any promises, but last year we had a couple free giveaways. So in signing up for the newsletter you will have advanced notice of when those giveaways come up.

VANDERWEELE FARMS will also have celery, carrots, beets, first of the year Yukon Gold new potatoes, jumbo yellow onions, radishes, red and green cabbage, lime green, purple, cheddar (yellow) and white cauliflower. Also lots of different lettuce varieties such as dark red oak, green and red romaine, lola rosa, as well as green and red leaf lettuce.

GLACIER VALLEY FARMS will be bringing their marvelous zucchini, English cucumbers and more tomatoes! I hope they will have more strawberries too. But you need to get there early as supplies are limited!

REMPEL FAMILY FARM continues to add some longer season veggies.  Green beans, celery, onions, leeks and pickling cucumbers will all be available, along with another 30 or so different vegetables.

MARY JANE will have her special Romanesco cauliflower.  It looks like it is from another planet, but maybe that explains why it tastes out of this world! It’s delicious. She will also have her selection of pastries and breads! I have to try the cinnamon raisin bread!  She will also be bringing homemade chocolate truffles in 12 flavors!  Tempting treats great to take home for something special that night or breakfast the next morning.

THE REDBEET CAFÉ is bringing something NEW this week!  Sea Buckthorn vinaigrette!  It’s yummy and tastes sort of like a cross between citrus and apricots.
Other things to look for:  Farmer’s Cheese and yogurt in NEW SNACK SIZED PACKETS!  Also NEW!  MULTI GRAIN GLUTEN FREE!!  AMAZING BUT TRUE!  This bread is made from a variety of seeds, buckwheat and flax.  Fabulous for sandwiches or everyday table eating.  All of our usual yummy Market Pies, both sweet and savory; dressings, vinaigrettes, fresh cultured yogurt, farmer’s cheese, and lots of sweet treats, both regular and gluten free.  Breads of various types and natural salves and balms by Hazel.

ARCTIC CHOICE SEAFOODS will have a great selection of salmon, scallops, oysters, side stripe shrimp, and lots of other great local seafood.  I tried their side strip shrimp and they are so sweet and cook up so tender.

RISE & SHINE BAKERY breads for this Saturday.  Pan loaves will be our signature 100% whole wheat sourdough levain (That means “naturally leavened bread” in French.) and the Alaskan barley bread, made with barley grown in Delta Junction.  Hearth loaves will be the light and lovely fresh rosemary bread, the Alaskan potato & chive loaves, and the ever-popular fruited almond bread, packed with golden raisins, dried cranberries, and apricots, and studded with toasted almonds and scented with almond extract.  See you on Saturday!!

VITALI AND MONICA SELDOVITSCH have Swiss chard, new potatoes, beets, turnips, zucchini, onions (white, yellow, red) and seedless cucumbers.

THREE BEARS FARM has a variety of unique jams and butters including: tomato pepper jam, cranberry walnut jam, apple butter, pumpkin butter, carrot jam, and strawberry rhubarb jam.

FARMER’S MARKETS AROUND ALASKA!
Are you traveling around Alaska this summer? Might you be tempted to stop in another town and look for a farmers market there? If this sounds like your ideal vacation (it’s definitely high on my list!), I have great news! I’ve just launched a website for the brand-new non-profit, the ALASKA FARMERS MARKET ASSOCIATION. Every farmers market in Alaska is listed by city, along with its location, dates, and hours of operation.  www.AlaskaFarmersMarkets.org

GLACIER VALLEY FARM CSA PRODUCE BOXES
If you’d like to pick up fresh local vegetables on Wednesdays, but the Dimond Center isn’t convenient, there is another option: GLACIER VALLEY FARM CSA PRODUCE BOXES! The boxes are available at pickup locations all over Anchorage, Eagle River, and Palmer.

The hefty boxes, costing $35 each, are filled with as much Alaskan produce as is available, augmented in the winter and spring with some vegetables and fruits from certified organic farms Outside. We’re ramping up the boxes to include more and more Alaskan produce each week! Each box also contains a newsletter loaded with delicious, healthy recipes tailored to the week’s vegetables.

You can sign up for a box once a week, twice a month, or more sporadically—you choose the dates! You pre-pay for your box, then pick it up at one of several locations in Anchorage, Eagle River, or the Valley. Please visit our website for more information! http://www.GlacierValleyCSA.com

Please pass this email along to anyone you think might be interested in receiving the weekly market news—they can visit our website at http://www.southanchoragefarmersmarket.com and sign up for our newsletter list.
